Attribution Glossary
At Lime Fine arts we do not sell fakes of original works and pass them off as originals under any circumstances. We sell original works and attributed works by named artists and occasionally we sell works ‘in the manner of’ famous artists. It is important to understand the differences of attribution prior to making a purchase and as such we have compiled helpful attribution description glossary below.
Pictures, Prints, Drawings and Sculpture
“Pablo Picasso”
– a work by the artist without any qualification.
Attribution qualifications:
“Attributed to Pablo Picasso”
– probably a work by the artist in whole or in part.
“Studio of Pablo Picasso/workshop of Pablo Picasso”
– a work executed in the studio or workshop of the artist, possibly under his supervision.
“Circle of Pablo Picasso”
– a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence.
“Follower of Pablo Picasso”
– a work executed in the artist’s style but not necessarily by a pupil.
“Manner of Pablo Picasso”
– a work executed in the artist’s style but of a later date.
“After Pablo Picasso”
– a copy (of any date) of a work of the artist.
“P**** Picasso”
– a work by an artist without literary reference or auction record
“SIGNED/DATED/TITLED”
– the work has been signed/dated/titled by the artist.
“BEARS SIGNATURE/INSCRIBED”
– the signature/inscription appears to be by a hand other than that of the artist.
The date given for modern and contemporary prints is the date (or approximate date when prefixed with ‘circa’) on which the original composition was conceived and not necessarily the date when the impression was printed or published.
